When the Ho Thuy Tien Water Park opened in Hue in 2004 to the reported tune of USD 3 million dollars, the locals were ecstatic. “We finally had somewhere to lớn hang out,” remembers Lan, a Hue local. “Our whole class would go camping there on holidays.”

The park had three waterslides, a waterpark và an amphitheater, all centered around the scenic Thuy Tien Lake.

The jewel of the water park was a huge long centerpiece housing aquariums filled with manta rays, sharks và other exotic fish.

Visitors could even take the spiral staircase up the “ribs” of the three-story high dragon for panoramic views over the lake.

*

Unfortunately, the park was never completed and was plagued with problems. “There wasn’t enough khổng lồ do và lake was just too big. There were no lifeguards và every year, some kid would fall in the water và drown,” says Lan.

*

Abandoned after just a few years, the park now sits empty, a wonderfully creepy & eerily quiet setting perfect for a Zombie apocalypse movie.

*

There’s been talk about renovating và re-opening the water park, but until now, all it is is talk. The amphitheater continues to sit empty.

The slides now wind their way through leafy trees.

The forest is reclaiming what was once a lazy river.

*

Visitors leave their mark in the khung of graffiti, adding to the abandoned aura of the place.

*

While the park isn’t technically open, there are ways to lớn get in. When we visited in April 2018, we found a guard at the entrance who showed us an official paper that said the park was closed.

*

However, catch the guard on a good day or slip him something for his troubles, and you’ll likely be granted access. There’s even a shaded structure to park your motorbike near the dragon aquarium, & an attendant lớn collect a parking “fee”.

*

However, we found a better way into the park through the back. Follow the road leading lớn the Tomb of Khai Dinh. Before the tomb, turn off at the sign for restaurant called “Nha Hang Sinh Thai”. Continue past the restaurant and take your second left onto a concrete path that passes by some houses. At the over of the path, you’ll see a little bridge which takes you into the park, close to the amphitheater và the waterslides.

Not just a great place for photos, the park’s haunted appearance has made its way into many music videos by local & international artists. Some famous examples are “Bad Memories” by Meduza, “Warpaint” by Niki, and “We Must Love” by Korean band ONF.

In particular, one of the park’s buildings with a giant rồng statue in the middle of a lake has been used as a visual highlight in these MVs, going so far as attracting the attention of foreign newspapers such as US site The Huffington Post and UK paper Mail Online.

The park had been abandoned twice

Hồ Thủy Tiên was originally opened in 2004 và then promptly abandoned after half a year of operations.

In 2008, it was picked up again by a company called Haco Huế which announced its plans for the restructuring & restoration of the park.

However, the project was then canceled for a second time, leaving the park in a desolate state, reclaimed by the surrounding nature.

Ironically, this new, gloomy appearance actually attracted more people khổng lồ the hồ nước Thủy Tiên, mainly because the post-apocalyptic aesthetic makes for some really great shots.

In 2017, hồ Thủy Tiên was reclaimed by the People’s Committee of Huế and its management transferred over to the local Department of Natural Resources & Environment.

Currently, the government is planning to clean up all the trash và plant litter there that has accumulated over the years, as well as repairing all the buildings và infrastructure in preparation for next year’s reopening.

Mixed reactions to lớn the reopening

While it’s great that hồ nước Thủy Tiên will be usable by the public after such a long time, some netizens also think it’s unfortunate that its current haunted aesthetic, which has given the park its charm, will be removed for the park’s reopening.

Still, we hope that the park becomes a popular spot again, giving life lớn a twice-abandoned location. After all, third time’s the charm!
